Is an online degree the right option?

Online degrees are an excellent option for most people, especially if they don't have the time to attend ordinary college or university. An online degree program will satisfy their academic needs while allowing them to keep working, studying another courses or taking care of their family. But there can be situations and cases where an online degree might not be such a good option. Therefore we recommend you to go through the following list of questions to see if an online degree is the best solution for you.

Are you self-directed and motivated ?

Most of online degree learning happens on your schedule. You'll need to be self-directed and motivated to complete activities on schedule and initiate the communication required to be successful in your online degree studies.

Are your computer and website skills enough ?

As well as having access to a computer and not being overwhelmed by typing, online degree learners should be comfortable with internet browsing and searching, email, sending and reading attachments, word processing, and sometimes downloading and installing software plug-ins. You can take a quiz to check your computer-literacy provided by North Carolina University.

How about written communication ? Does it come easily to you ?

Writing is the primary method of communication in online degree classes, so you should be comfortable with writing to express your thoughts, share ideas, and ask questions.

Are you too shy or will you ask questions when you need to ?

If you normally don't hesitate to seek help when you need it, then you'll do well. Since you'll be in an online degree environment it's important to let your instructors and even your classmates know when you need assistance. Remember that they won't be able to see your body language to tell when things aren't going well.

Would you miss the social life ?

Interaction with instructors and classmates in online learning is often a big part of the learning experience. But being able to see facial expressions, hear reactions, and speak is also an important part in study life, and you might miss it. Think about this before choosing an online degree program Do you have the necessary discipline to study regularly ?

Like in traditional schools, you'll need enough time to study. You may discover that you need to be online frequently to complete assignments or communicate with your online degree instructors. You can set your own pace but it doesn't mean you can allocate less time to study. You may need at least as much time as in traditional learning.

If you decide to choose an online school for your education, it's important to also choose the right degree path. Some subjects provide a number of different options within their field. For example, there are numerous types of criminal justice degrees online and they all have a unique focus. It's important to pick a field with many specialties because a general degree can lack the provision of focus for a career.
