Online Degree Short Dictionary: Accelerated Course
Completion of a study program of study in fewer than the usual number of years, most often by carrying extra courses online during the regular academic term.

Online Degree Short Dictionary: Access Course
Aimed at people over the age of 19 returning to education, these courses are designed to prepare you for University study. Usually run at Further Education Colleges.

Online Degree Short Dictionary: Accreditation

Online Degree Short Dictionary: Admission

Online Degree Short Dictionary: Aligning
Recognizing the relationship between your online educational institution and the external environment, seeking to “match” internal strengths with external opportunities, and thereby heighten the flow of resources to the institution.

Online Degree Short Dictionary: Analog
Fluctuating electronic signal used for the store and transfer of data. The continuous nature of analog signals makes it relatively difficult to store, manipulate, and transfer data. Analog signals are transmitted slower than digital signals.

Online Degree Short Dictionary: Applet
A small program or application that runs on a browser and enables additional features.

Online Degree Short Dictionary: Application
A software program that allows a user to perform specific tasks.

Online Degree Short Dictionary: ARPANET

Online Degree Short Dictionary: ASCII
An acronym for American Standard Code for Information Interchange. It is a coding scheme that represents letters of the alphabet, numerals, and special characters as a series of binary digits or numbers.

Online Degree Short Dictionary: Associate’s Degree
Degree program requiring over sixty hours of specified course work.

Online Degree Short Dictionary: Asynchronous Learning
“Learning happening at different times”. Learning where people are not online at the same time and interaction does not occur without a time delay, allowing people to participate on their schedules. Examples are email, discussion groups, and self-paced courses delivered via Internet or CD-ROM. "Asynchronous" refers to the timing of the interaction between participants in a Online Education course. Unlike face-to-face synchronous courses that require students and instructors to assemble at a certain time and place, asynchronous is not bound by time and location. In an asynchronous mode, students and instructors "interact" at their own convenience by accessing the web pages of the class, which are password protected. One student may work at 11 p.m. while another will work at 9 a.m. (but they can interact and leave messages to each other). In this format it is important for students to log in often (at least three times each week) to maximize the benefits of an online course.

Online Degree Short Dictionary: Asynchronous Learning Network
The use of telephone message handling equipment to connect multiple parties simultaneously as is done in a conference telephone call.

Online Degree Short Dictionary: ATM
Asynchronous Transfer Mode networks (based on packet switching). A mode of data transfer in which units of data are not time-related to each other.

Online Degree Short Dictionary: Audio Conferencing
Voice-only connection between three or more locations.

B

Online Degree Short Dictionary: Bachelor’s Degree
The degree of bachelor of arts or bachelor of science, typically requiring 120 hours of specified course work.

Online Degree Short Dictionary: Bandwidth
The range of frequencies, expressed in Kilobits per second, that can pass over a given data transmission channel within a frame relay network. The bandwidth determines the rate at which information can be sent through a channel: the greater the bandwidth, the more information that can be sent in a given amount of time.

Online Degree Short Dictionary: BBS (bulletin board system)
A system maintained by a host computer for posting information, carrying on discussions, uploading and downloading files, chatting, and other online services. BBSs are generally created for a specific group of users and are usually topic-specific.

Online Degree Short Dictionary: Bit
In the binary number system, the bit is either 0 or 1. In electronic storage, it represents the smallest unit of data and is characterized as being either “on” or “off.” Groups of eight bits are combined to represent characters of data that are referred to as bytes.

Online Degree Short Dictionary: Blended Learning
An increasing popular combination of online and in-person learning activities.

Online Degree Short Dictionary: Blog (Weblog)
A public website where users post informal journals of their thoughts, comments, and philosophies, updated frequently and normally reflecting the views of the blog's creator.

Online Degree Short Dictionary: Book and Supply Costs
Average cost of books and supplies. Do not include unusual costs for special groups of students (e.g., engineering or art majors), unless they constitute the majority of students at your institution.

Online Degree Short Dictionary: Broadband
A communication network in which the bandwidth can be divided and shared by multiple simultaneous signals (voice, data, video). The network can carry multiple signals by dividing the total capacity of the medium into multiple, independent bandwidth channels, where each channel operates only on a specific range of frequencies.

Online Degree Short Dictionary: Browser
Software that provides facilities for accessing Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) on the World Wide Web. Examples of Web browsers include Netscape Navigator and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.

Online Degree Short Dictionary: Bursar
Campus office where student tuition and fee payments are made. Virtual campuses usually have an online bursar.

Online Degree Short Dictionary: Byte
The minimum amount of primary storage or memory needed to store a character (letter, number, special character) of information. It usually is eight bits (binary digits). Because the English Latin alphabet has 52 characters (upper and lower case) and computers commonly also use punctuation marks and a few special characters such as the period, exclamation mark, slashes, equal sign, tilde, ampersand, dollar symbol, pound sign, percent mark, asterisk, plus sign, and carriage return. Including punctuation mark and special characters, we need approximately 100 unique codes. Each bit can exist in only two states, 0 or 1. Thus, a 6 bit word can define only 64 characters, a 7 bit word can define 128 characters, and an 8 bit word can define 256 characters. If one bit is used to check the integrity of the entire byte, then we need at least an 8 bit byte (or "word") for common computer uses.

The "Issue" task states an opinion on an issue of general interest and asks you to address the issue from any perspective(s) you wish, as long as you provide relevant reasons and examples to explain and support your views. The "Argument" task presents a different challenge — it requires you to critique an argument by discussing how well reasoned you find it. You are asked to consider the logical soundness of the argument rather than to agree or disagree with the position it presents. These two tasks are complementary in that the first requires you to construct a personal argument about an issue, and the second requires you to critique someone else's argument by assessing its claims. This is the most challenging part of the GRE test.
